Despite the dramatic landscapes present such as the towering mountain ranges, luscious and dense rainforests and glistening lakes, Burundi is not exactly known as a tourist magnet. This tiny land-locked country from Africa is a compelling destination to visit and makes for a striking holiday resort given the kind of attractions present. But unfortunately, the current political scenario has made it difficult for tourists to embark on a journey there. Travellers are warned to not make any plans to visit Burundi until the conflict is completely resolved.

One of the most popular and 'must-see' attractions in the country is Lake Tanganyika. It is the longest in the planet and the second-largest in Africa, covering an area of 19,883.9 sq miles. It is home to impressive biodiversity and has over 1,300 plant and animal species housed there, from the microscopic algae to huge crocodiles, along with 300 species of tiny and large fishes.

Do spend some time at Bujumbura. It is largest city of the country as well as the capital. Bujumbura National museum is an incredible place to visit for it contains a small zoo as well as a natural history museum. Some of the exhibits include a chimpanzee fish from Lake Tanganyika, crocodiles, birds and snakes. One can even find a traditional Burundian village on the grounds.

Be sure to take a trip to the Rusizi National Park, residing near Bujumbura, where one will have the chance to glimpse hippos and crocodiles sunning themsleves on the banks of the Rusizi River. This is the same place where Gustave, the globe's biggest Nile crocodile, has been seen. Many varieties of birds can also be glimpsed there. Beach-a-holics will have a gala time for there are several beaches in and around the capital where one can hit to lounge around. Don't forget to drop by at Kagera Falls, housed in south-eastern Burundi. They are a magnificent series of waterfalls and spans over 142 hectares, is made up of six branches and split on three landings.

There are numerous national parks that are well worth the visit. Head over to Kibira National Park - housed at the top of the apex Zaire-Nile, with its 40,000 hectares of preserved forest land. Be sure to try and catch a glimpse of chimpanzees, baboons and monkeys (cercophitecus and colobus). Access to the park is via the tea plantations of Teza and Rwegura.

Head over to Bururi National Reserve where one will find 117 different species of birds and 25 different species of mammals have been glimpsed in this forestland. One of the primary reasons to visit the Vyanda Natural Rserve is to gaze at the chimpanzees. Do drop by at the Rwihinda Lake Natural Reserve - a real sanctuary for migratory aquatic birds which land on the site to reproduce. Crested cranes and herons have made this reserve their home. Looking for some quiet and peace? Sti by the magnificent lake Rweru, known for its dense mangroves and walking trails.

Take a trip to Rumonge, one of the key tourist destination in the southern region of Burundi. Adjacent to Lake Tanganyika, the city is brimming with stunning beaches and dramatic landscapes. Walk around the town and move past the big white houses that date as back as the Belgian colonial period and a stunning countryside.

When it comes to shopping, be sure to purchase local crafts, especially basketwork. Be sure to try out some of the local specialities in this country such as the Ibiharage: red kidney beans stewed simply with onion and chilli or spicy carrots: a side delicacy of carrots mixed with mustard seeds and chilli peppers. As for night-life, there are several bars and clubs spruced around in the country for people to enjoy.
