France's Sacred City

Lourdes is a favourite among religious folks for the metropolis is one of the leading Catholic pilgrimage sites in the planet. This small town lying in the foot-hills of the Pyrenees in France is considered to be one of the holiest places out there with hordes of tourists flocking to this destination. Catholics are of the belief that Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, appeared 18 times at the Grotto, to a young 14-year old girl, St. Bernadette Soubrious.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is a zone fringing the Catholic Shrine (Grotto) to Our Lady of Lourdes. According to folklore, sick pilgrims are said to be miraculously healed by the water that are dispensed from the nearby taps. The Crypt was one of the first churches to be finished in the Domain. The Crypt is entered along a corridor, whose entrance features a large bronze statue of St. Peter. Head over to the Basilica of the Immacular Conception. Perched atop the rock over the Grotto, it was designed by Hippolyte Durand and was built between 1866 and 1872.

Be sure to drop by at the Rosary Basilica, the third of the churches to be finished and features Byzantine architecture. It was designed by architect Leopold Hardy and was constructed between 1883 and 1889. It wad consecrated in 1901. The open space in front of the Rosary Basilica is known as Rosary Square. Be sure to visit the Basilica of Saint Pius X, also known as the Underground Basilica. It is a huge Roman Catholic church and minor basilica. It is part of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Don't forget to explore the Wax Museum where there are plenty of life size wax figures where visitors can be introduced to the incredible story of St. Bernadettes' life and Jesus Christ. Take a day to explore the magnificent Pyrenees. Road-trips to Pont d'Espangne, Gavarine or de Col de Tourmalet is a must for it provides incredible mountain scenery and excellent opportunities for hiking. History aficionados will love visiting the historic chateau that can be glimpsed on the hill from the town.

When it comes to shopping, there are numerous items that can be purchased which ranges from religious souvenirs such as statuettes of saints, rosaries, candles and so forth. As for cuisine, it would be a shame is not gorge into a few of their local specialties such as Gabure - a nourishing vegetable and bean soup, Confits - prepared from duck or goose and Touradisse - a corn-flour-based pastry.
