Sun-n-Sand fun in Cuba
Looking for a destination to have some fun in sun-n-sand? Try the gorgeous Varadero. Encompassing Cuba's narrow Hocacos Peninsula, it is a popular seaside town. It is one of the biggest vacation retreats in the Caribbean.
Varadero is meant to be a relatively exclusive part of Cuba, replete with a plethora of private hotels, sparkling beaches and the nation's only full golf course. It is a haven for those who enjoy holidaying in island with its beautiful beaches and clear turquoise waters. Kick-start the trip by heading over to Varadero Beach. Running 20 kms along the elegant Peninsula de Hicacos, it is one of Caribbean's finest. As you sit and admire the sheer natural beauty, one can make arrangements to say at any of the 50 and more all-inclusive resort. Indulge in water sports such as snorkeling, swimming, kayaking and sailing.
Saturno Cave is the highlight of a complex cave system. This mesmerizing and gorgeous cenote or subterranean swimming hole rewards visitors with a wonderful breather from the sun-drenched beach. One can catch a glimpse of the stalactites dripping from the roof of the cave and the stalagmites rise from the water's depths. Take a dip in the pool's azure-hued freshwater, dive off the crystallized columns and marvel at the remarkable rock formations. Spend some time at Parque Josone, a serene oasis housed at the center of Varadero. Stroll around through the flower-decked gardens, ornamental bridge and wander around the stunning fountains. Tourists visit this place to paddle or glide around the lake on rowboats or lounge in the shade of the poinciana and palm trees.
Those who love nature can drop by at the Varadero Ecological Park, housed at the far end of the Hicacos Peninsula. This protected area is a nature reserved packed with a gorgeous beach, a plethora of plant species such as cactus and orchids, a bird-rich lagoon and a variety of birds, insects and lizards. Hikers can explore the narrow hiking trails through the preserve. Do head over to Delfinaro where animal lovers can kiss, cuddle and interact with the dolphins. Visitors can pat them, swim through the water with them as well as take part in fun tricks with these lovable marine creatures.
Head over northeast of Varadero - a famous diving and snorkeling, referred to as Cayo Piedra Underwater Park. Big schools of multi-hued fish float in and out of rusted hills. Divers and snorkelers can also catch glimpses of turtles, sharks and crustaceans. Do head over to Varadero Museum, visitors can trace the peninsula's history.
When it comes to shopping, be on the lookout to procure rum, cigars, coffee and jewelry. Any trip to Varadero is not complete without gorging into some of their local delicacies such as the delicious Cuban sandwich - made with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and occasionally salami on Cuban bread.
Varadero is home to a plethora of stay options with the best luxury hotels and swanky apartments available to their disposal. At the same time, backpackers and penny pinchers would choose cheap and budget accommodations. The best time to visit would be November through April, during the dry, winter season.
