City of Bridges

Saskatoon is aptly nicknamed as the 'Bridge City' or 'City of Bridges' due to the large amount of bridges that cross the Saskatchewan River which split the metropolis. This city in central Saskatchewan is also known as the Paris of the Prairies. Saskatoon is not only beautiful to look at with its wide, tree-lined streets amid extensive parks and green spaces but it also houses a number of historical gems that enhance its glorious heritage.

Kick-start the trip by heading over to the Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Housed about 3 kilometers north of Saskatoon, this park hopes to foster a better understanding of the indigenous peoples who inhabited the area in earlier times. The park houses some great archaeological finds, some dating as far back at least 6,000 to 7,000 years ago. Nature lovers would love to explore the Meewasin Valley Trail. Perched on both banks of the South Saskatchewan River, it includes city parks and a few historic sides. Part of the nation-spanning Trans Canada Trail, the route is popular with hikers, all throughout the year.

Those who are academically inclined, be sure to visit the University of Saskatchewan for it is the intellectual and cultural centre in the city. Constructed in a collegiate Gothic style, the university's Peter Mackinnon Building is a national historic side and the heart of the campus. Some of the other highlights include an observatory, sculpture garden and theater at the acclaimed education center. When in the University of Saskatchewan, do head over to the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, it is a combination of archive and museum dedicated to the life and times of Canada's 13th Prime Minister. It houses replicas of the Cabinet Camber and Prime Minister's office.

Those who are animal lovers ought to visit the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo. Over 90 species of birds and animals, from Capuchin monkeys to grey wolves, are housed in settings resembling their natural habitats. One will also find a tropical fish display and nature walkways, which is a non-profit, volunteer-driven operation.

Saskatoon is packed with plenty of museums. Some of them are: Western Development Museum (replicate and showcase the history of the Canadian west), Ukrainian Museum of Canada (devoted to many settlers who came here from the Ukraine and contributed to the nation's progression) and Mendel Art Gallery (temporary as well as permanent exhibitions of international, national, and regional art).

When it comes to shopping, do explore the Broadway Ave. A plethora of chic boutique outlets can be found there. As for cuisine, do indulge in local fare served in plenty of restaurants dotted in the city.

The stay options in Saskatoon are abundant with the best luxury hotels, cheap accommodations and rental apartments available for the tourists to decide which kind to opt for based on their budget and taste.

Saskatoon experiences borderline semi-arid/humid continental climate. The best time to visit would be during the summer months for the temperatures are considered to be the most pleasant during this period.
