Ride on the Red Deer

Red Deer is known for being the hub for oil and agriculture production, and the surrounding region is a chief location for petrochemical production. This metropolis in Central Alberta is housed near the mid-point of the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor and is fringed by Red Deer County. Known to be Alberta's third-most populous city after Calgary and Edmonton, this metropolis is a major activity destination and cultural center.

Kick-start the trip by heading over to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum which is devoted to history of sports within the province. Spanning over 6,000 sq feet, it is home to over 7,000 artifacts relating to Alberta sports history. Some of the highlights include the interactive hockey rink, baseball pitching field and alpine skiing machine.

If you're a nature lover, do make it a point to spend some time at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, adjacent to the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary. With a sprawling 118-hectares, it is a municipally-owned federal migratory bird sanctuary. It offers five kilometers of trails, a bird blind and viewing decks. It must be noted that no skiing, jogging, pets or cycling are allowed in the Sanctuary.

Do make it a point to visit Fort Normandeau, situated five minutes west of Red Deer. It is a historical site and marks the birthplace of Red Deer. It used to belong to the Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal in 1885 during the Riel Rebellion. The Fort is housed near the Red Deer Crossing along the Red Deer River.

If you're wondering about fun things to do in Red Deer then one can go biking in Red Deer Mountain Bike Park. It exhibits a huge amount of cross country trails as well as trails built for stunts. Go horseback riding at Heritage Range. Its equestrian center is open through out the year and features horse drawn wagon rides, trail rides, and pony rides. One can opt for Cross Country skiing as throughout the town, there are cross country tails, including around Heritage Ranch, Great Chief Park and Red Deer College.
