Get wild in the Kangroo Island

If you're a wild-life enthusiast, then visiting Kangaroo Island is a must. Australia's third-biggest island after Tasmania and Melville Island is also known for its breathtaking natural wonders, premium wineries and sun-drenched beaches. Kangaroo Island is replete with natural vegetation and native animals, which is its primary attraction.

Kick-start the trip by heading over to the Flinders Chase National Park. Situated at the western end of Kangaroo Island, it is one of the top national parks out there. One will find much of the park to be mallee scrub. There are some stunning, tall, sugar-gum forests, especially around Rocky River and the Ravine des Casoars, 5km south of Cape Borda. Do stop by at the Kelly Hill Conservation Park, a series of dry limestone caves that was found in the 1880s by a horse named Kelly, who fell into them through a hole. Do go on a cave tour to learn more about the history and to explore the place.

Do make it a point to spend some time at the Seal Bay Conservation Park. Take a guided tour where you walk around the beach and catch a glimpse of several Australian sea lions. Do drop over at the Rocky River which is packed with kangaroos, wallabie and Cape Barren geese. One might even spot a platypus, if you're lucky.

Head over to Cape Willoughby Lightstation, located about 28km southeast of Penneshaw. Having first shone in 1852, today, it is used as a weather station. Take a tour and one will gather around a ton of shipwreck information. Housed on the northwestern corner of the island, the 1858 Cape Borda Lightstation towers over the sparkling iron surface of the Southern Ocean.

Be sure to head over to the Chapman River Wines. Situated in a converted aircraft hanger, this eclectic winery is adorned with art and quirky pieces from churches, pubs and homesteads from around Southern Australia. Don't miss out on the Hope Cottage Museum. Constructed on the hill in 1857, the cottage, today, is a National Trust museum exhibited in period style, with a reconstructed lighthouse, an incredible old quilt, a small walled rose garden and KI's first piano.

When it comes to shopping, be sure to head over to souvenir shops such as Kingscote and Penneshaw. As for cuisine, be sure to dig into delicacies served in any of the restaurants dotted in the city. One can visit Kangaroo Island any time of the year as the temperatures never get too hot or too cold.
