Austrian Holiday Resort
Seefeld has come a long way from the old farming village it once used to be. Today, it is a major tourist resort in Innsbruck-Land District in the Austrian state of Tyrol. Tourism began to develop in the early 20th century, but has only expanded to its current size, since the 1970s.
Kick-start the trip by spending some time at the lakes in the Olympic region Seefeld. This beautiful landscape on the Seefeld high plateau was always known for its lakes. They are interesting owing to the historical elements which gave them their names. Do head out to the Leutasch Gorge, near Mittenwald and Unterleutasch in the eBavarian-Tyrolean border area through which the Leutascher Ache river flows. Do stroll around the walkways which are horizontal as much as possible and are designed in such a way that they can navigated without any climbing equipment.
Do head over to the the Bell of Peace in Mosern near Telfs that was built to mark the 25th anniversary of the Alpine Area Work Group (ARGE ALP). The bell is to signify cross bordering peace initiatives and friendships made between the people of the Alpine Area. Weighing over 10 tonnes, it is the largest swinging bell in the Alpine area. The old fences in Mosern are a significant part of the cultural landscape. They are few of the oldest testimonials of agricultural tradition that are interesting for visitors.
Those who are interested in nature can go on the Reith Bee Nature Trail that gives out a great insight into the life of honey bees. When it comes to religious shrines, do head out to the Parish Church of St. Oswald - regarded as one of the most significant Gothic buildings in Tirol. One of the symbols of Seefeld is the Lake Church of Holy Cross (Sreekirchl), erected under Archduke Leopold V by Innsbruck's court architect, Christoph Gumpp. It was designed in baroque style (built 1629-1666) and the paintings were by Josef Anton Puellacher.
Seefeld is a popular tourist destination and is well-known for its sporting activities. It is famous for both - nordic sports and skiing in winter & hiking. The town of Seefeld is home to a casino, town cinema, spas and indoor pools, natural and artificial ice skating sites and houses several music and sports events all through the year.
As far as Austrian cuisine is concerned, those with sweet-tooth can dig into the popular Sachertorte - delicious chocolate cake prepared with a thin layer of apricot jam and a rich chocolate glaze or gorge into the scrumptious Salzburg Nockerl, made from egg yolk, flour, sugar and vanilla and served with raspberry sauce. When it comes to drinks, sip on the refreshing and sparkling Eiswein (Ice wine), a kind of dessert wine, produced from grapes that have been frozen while they were still on the vine.
