Ski into the heart of Innsbruck

Winter sports enthusiasts would enjoy visiting Innsbruck for it is the largest ski resort in the Alps. The provincial capital of Tyrol is has not only twice hosted the Winter Olympics but was also one of the eight host cities in the 2008 European Foot Championships. This Austrian metropolis is the fifth largest in the country and is viewed as a major holiday destination for indulging in skiing.

Head out to the magnificent Court Church, the Hofkirche, that was designed in Late Gothic style. This three-aisled hall-church boasts of many shimmering features such as the 18th-century high altar and side altars as well as the choir screen from the 17th century. Be sure to head over to St. John's Cathedral that is renowned for its twin-towered west front and a high dome over the choir. It was built in Baroque style and completely restored after WWII.

Be sure to simply stroll around the Old Town and walk past the narrow home-fronts, handsome doorways, oriel windows and arcaded-facades. It represents old Tyrolese architecture along with several glorious Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo buildings. Families with kids would love visiting the Alpenzoo Innsbruck-Tyrol. This picturesque zoo is renowned for its collection of mountain animals from the globe's Alpine regions - including mammals, birds and reptiles. It is home to over 2,000 animals from more than 150 different Alpine species. Plenty of aquatic life with loads of marine animals can be viewed at the world's biggest cold-water aquarium.

Don't forget to head out to the south of Innsbruck that rises over the 746-meter tall hill called Bergisel, popular for its premium sports facilities. Some of the highlights are Olympia ski-jump designed to replace the earlier Olympic structure - along with its incredible new tower that offers superlative views over the city. Innsbruck is well-known to be Austria's top skiing destination. Be sure to get a ski pass that encompasses over 500 kms of trails. Some of the prominent ski slopes are the ski village of Igls, Hungerburg-Seegrube, Hafelkar and the village of Axams.

When it comes to shopping, there are numerous shops that can be visited in places such as Maria-Theresien-Strasse, the Old Town, Franziskanerplatz, Sparkassenplatz and Anichstrasse as well as Museumstrasse. As for cuisine, do try out cheese, ham or gherkins. The night-life is great as there are plenty of watering holes spruced around this holiday town.

Innsbruck experiences oceanic climate. The best time to visit this vacation retreat would be during the winter months. After all, most of the tourists flock to this destination so as to participate in winter sports.
